The polaroid Spectra (Image in UK and Europe) system of cameras where introduced in 1986 and where a completely new system for polaroid, using an integrated pack film like the 600 series, but with a rectangular format as opposed to square.
The decision was not unexpected upon release as earlier polaroid pack films had always had a square (80 series) or rectangular (100 series) option, so the decision to do the same with there new electronic cameras was not seen as a surprise.
As was combo with Polaroid, the Spectra system utilised a 3 element plastic lens and sonar based autofocus. The camera had a flat profile with a pop up design, and a fixed optical viewfinder.
The biggest difference with the Spectra system was that it was actively marketed at a range of professional users and had specialist accessories made for it to enable extreme close up, special effects and remote photography.
They even produced a special "Police" kit which had special accessories for documenting fingerprints and fine details and objects for forensic uses.
This first edition spectra kit was one of the first "packages" made available and comes supplied in purpose made cases, which in turn store in a purpose made camera bag made for Polaroid by Tenba. The system was truly made with no expense spared.
The kit includes the camera, a filter holder and selection of special effects filters, a close up copying lens and a radio wireless trigger system.
The system ran from 1986 until Polaroid ceased trading, the spectra and image systems had many incarnations, including the very cool see through "Onyx" versions, special police dept issues and a variety of kits produced for any use imaginable.
